Columns are separate machines that look like one

A Thermador Freedom installation is usually two or three independent refrigeration units, a fresh-food column and a freezer column, sometimes a wine column, each with its own inverter compressor, evaporator, condenser and control, joined only by the cabinetry and the panels. That is why one column can fail while the others run perfectly, and why the diagnosis starts by asking which one. The bottom-freezer T36 and T42 built-ins are single units with a dual-evaporator layout, and the French door and side-by-side pairs share the BSH platform with Bosch, with the same control logic and the same parts pipeline.

The failures we see in South Florida sort three ways. Defrost: a column that frosts or a fresh-food section that runs warm because a defrost heater or sensor stopped cycling. Airflow and heat: a condenser in the base packed with dust, a condenser fan that failed, or an installation with no ventilation clearance behind a custom panel, which cooks the compressor over years. Electronics: the inverter board that drives the compressor, the main control that throws E-codes, and the door sensors on panel-ready units that drift when a heavy custom panel pulls the hinge out of alignment.

How we work it

Fault codes, BSH-family parts, panel alignment on every visit

Thermador controls log their faults and show them as E-codes on the display; we read them first, then check the condenser and the ventilation clearance, then the column that failed. Parts move through the Bosch distribution network: fans, sensors, gaskets and door hardware are on the truck, inverter and control boards in two to four business days. On panel-ready units we check hinge alignment and door sensor readings on every visit, because a sagging custom panel produces frost and alarms that look like refrigeration faults.

Sealed-system work is quoted with pressures and current draw in hand and carries our extended coverage. The $59 diagnostic is free when you approve the repair, and the history stays on each column's serial, which matters when there are three of them.

From real service tickets

Thermador refrigerator repair — failures we see.

Documented from the platform, not a brochure.

Fresh-food column warm, freezer column fine

The fresh-food column's own defrost has stopped cycling and its evaporator iced, or its evaporator fan failed. Separate machine, separate diagnosis. Heater, sensor or fan, same visit.

Freezer column frosting, ice on the back wall

Defrost heater or sensor on that column, or a door that no longer seals because the custom panel pulled the hinge out of line. We check the panel alignment before condemning a part.

E-codes on the display

Thermador reports sensor faults, fan faults, door faults and communication errors as numbered E-codes. Each narrows the diagnosis to one or two parts. Tell dispatch the code when you call.

Compressor runs constantly, unit warm, condenser dirty or no clearance

A condenser packed with dust, a failed condenser fan, or an installation with no air path behind the panel. We clean, test the fan, and tell you if the cabinet needs a vent. If all of that is fine, the inverter or a leak, confirmed with readings.

Ice maker dead or slow

Fill valve, ice maker module, or a frozen fill tube on the freezer column; on French door units the door ice maker's cold-air duct. A same-visit part on most models.

Custom panel door sags, alarm chirps, gasket sweats

Panel-ready hinges are rated for a panel weight, and stone or heavy wood exceeds it. We re-tension and realign the hinges, replace the gasket, and reset the door sensor. A common call in Coral Gables and Bal Harbour kitchens.

Inverter board failed, compressor silent or clicking

The board that drives the variable-speed compressor. A $400 fix that looks like a $2,000 compressor from the front. We test the board and the compressor windings before quoting either.

Dead after a storm

The main control taken out by a surge. We test outputs, replace, and check the outlet and surge protection so the new one survives the next one.

FAQ

Thermador refrigerator repair — questions we get

  • One of my Thermador columns is warm and the other is fine. Why?

Because they are separate refrigerators behind matching panels. The warm column has usually iced its evaporator after a defrost heater or sensor failed, or lost its evaporator fan. $260 to $480 for the part, and the other column is unaffected.

  • What do the E-codes on a Thermador refrigerator mean?

Sensor, fan, door and communication faults, each with its own number. The code narrows the diagnosis to one or two parts before the panels come off. Tell dispatch the code and the technician arrives with the likely part.

  • My panel-ready Thermador door sags and the alarm chirps. Is the fridge failing?

Usually not. A heavy custom panel pulls the hinge out of alignment, the door stops sealing, the sensor reads it as open and the compartment frosts. Realignment, gasket and sensor reset run $240 to $540, and the refrigeration side is fine.

  • How much does Thermador refrigerator repair cost?

Condenser cleaning $170 to $320; fans, defrost parts, gaskets and ice makers $240 to $540; an inverter board $380 to $680; a main control $450 to $850; sealed-system work $900 to $2,400 per column. The $59 diagnostic is free when you approve the repair.

  • Are you an authorized Thermador service center?

No. Berne is an independent service company, not affiliated with Thermador or BSH Home Appliances. For a unit under factory warranty, factory-designated service protects the coverage. Out of warranty, an independent shop with deep Thermador experience is faster and cheaper, and we say so if your case belongs on the other side of that line.
