Star burners on gas, a power board on induction
Thermador's gas tops are built around the five-point Star burner. The shape gives more flame ports than a round burner, and it also means the cap has to sit exactly right. Seat it a few degrees off after cleaning and you get a lazy, lopsided flame or ports that won't catch. Below the burners sit one spark module, an electrode per burner, and a switch on each valve stem. ExtraLow cycles the flame on and off on purpose to hold a low simmer, so some clicking at that setting is normal. Constant clicking with every knob off is not.
The induction side has no flame and no electrodes. A CIT top is glass over copper coils, driven by power boards with cooling fans under them. The faults are electronic: a zone that won't detect the pan, a fan that clogged with grease and lets the board overheat, a board that took a surge in a summer storm. The Freedom induction surface, where you can put a pan anywhere, runs a coil grid instead of fixed zones and is diagnosed zone by zone.
Isolate the burner, then the module
On gas we unplug electrodes one at a time to find the one that's shorting, check each valve switch for moisture or grease, and test the spark module output. Burner caps and bases get checked for seating and blocked ports. A lot of 'my cooktop is broken' calls end with a cleaned electrode and a dried switch. When the module or a switch has failed, it gets replaced.
On induction we read the fault, run each zone with a test pan, check fan airflow and measure the board supply. Glass replacement is a real job on these tops, and if the glass is cracked we say so before anyone orders a board. The $59 diagnostic is free when you approve the repair, and every repair carries the 90-day parts and labor warranty.

Moisture or a boil-over got into one valve switch, or an electrode is grounding. It happens a lot after a deep clean in Miami humidity. We isolate the burner and dry or replace the switch.
The Star burner cap isn't seated, or ports on one arm are blocked. Seat the cap, clear the ports. If the flame is still weak, the burner base or orifice gets checked.
ExtraLow cycles the flame by design. If it goes out and stays out, the cycling valve or its control isn't relighting it. That needs a part.
Air shutter or orifice issues, or the wrong gas conversion after a remodel. Common on units moved from natural gas to propane on the islands and in some Broward homes.
Cookware with a thin or non-magnetic base, or a coil or sensor fault. We test with a known pan first so you don't pay for a part your pot caused.
Overheating protection. The cooling fan under the glass is clogged or failed, or there's no air gap under the cabinet. Fan cleaning or replacement, plus a check of the cutout.
Power boards are the part most exposed to surges. We measure supply at the board, then quote the board or the fuse on it.
The glass is a full top replacement on most CIT models. Worth a quote before deciding to replace the whole cooktop.

Why does my Thermador cooktop keep clicking when it's off?
One burner's valve switch or electrode is shorting, usually from moisture or a spill. Let the top dry for a day; if it keeps clicking, the switch needs drying out or replacing. It's a quick isolation test at the $59 diagnostic.
Is clicking normal on ExtraLow?
Yes. ExtraLow turns the flame on and off to hold a very low simmer, and the igniter clicks each time it relights. If the flame goes out and doesn't come back, that's a fault.
Do you repair Thermador induction and Freedom induction cooktops?
Yes, CIT induction tops including the Freedom surface. Most calls are pan detection, overheating from a clogged fan, or a power board after a surge.
