A CVA is a plumbed appliance, not a coffee maker
The CVA line — CVA 6401, 6805, 7440, 7845 and their predecessors — sits in the same cabinet run as the ovens, takes a water line, and drains like a dishwasher. That changes the failure list entirely. A countertop machine that quits is an inconvenience; a plumbed CVA that weeps from the 3-way solenoid soaks the cabinet base for months before anyone notices, and the first symptom is a floor panel that has started to swell. We check the base of the cabinet on every CVA call whether or not anyone reported a leak.
The CM6 and CM7 countertop machines share most of the internals — the same brew unit architecture, the same flow meter, the same descaling logic — which is why the two lines fail the same way and get serviced the same way. What differs is access: the CVA has to come out of the cabinet on rails, and getting it out without marking the surround is half the skill. Miele parts support for these machines is genuinely good, and the brew unit is a serviceable assembly rather than a sealed box. Seals, O-rings, the brew piston, the drive gears and the 3-way valve are all available, typically two to four business days through the US parts network. Water first, brew unit second, everything else after that
South Florida tap water runs 200–350 ppm hardness, and that number explains most of what goes wrong with these machines. Calcium plates the boiler, narrows the flow path, and eventually blinds the flow meter — at which point the machine can no longer measure its own descaling cycle and either aborts halfway or re-flags descale the moment it finishes. Owners run the cycle three more times, buy a second bottle of descaler, and call us when the message still will not clear. The fix is manual decalcification with the panels off: boiler and brew circuit circulated properly, flow meter and 3-way valve cleaned by hand, flow verified against spec afterward.
The brew unit is the other half of the job. Coffee oils harden into varnish on the gears and the piston, the brew seals flatten with age, and the assembly starts binding or refusing to return home. It comes out, gets stripped, cleaned, resealed with fresh O-rings and food-safe grease, and the gear timing gets reset before it goes back. That single service accounts for more resurrected Miele machines than everything else we do combined. If the housing is cracked or the drive gear is stripped, we install the OEM assembly and say so in the quote rather than nursing a broken part.

The machine cannot push clean flow through a calcified circuit, so the flow meter never reads what the cycle expects and the message comes straight back. Running the onboard cycle again does nothing at this stage. Manual decalcification with the flow meter and 3-way valve cleaned by hand is what clears it, and it is a one-visit job on most machines.
Hardened coffee oils on the gears and piston, or a brew seal that has flattened and let grounds pack into the mechanism. The unit comes out, gets stripped and resealed, and the gear timing gets reset. This is the single most common Miele coffee repair and the one that saves the most machines.
Usually the 3-way solenoid valve that dumps puck pressure, or a supply fitting weeping behind the surround. It hides for months and shows up as a warped cabinet floor. We isolate the leak under pressure — valve, fittings, internal lines, boiler gasket — and replace the failed part rather than guessing at the wettest one.
Thermoblock scaled over, or an NTC temperature sensor reading wrong and the controller chasing a number it will never hit. We measure element resistance and sensor values cold before anything is ordered. Scale is the root cause often enough that the descaling verdict comes with it.
The milk circuit skipped its cleaning cycles long enough for the lines and air valve to load up. Lines, valve and the frother path get serviced properly, and we set out the maintenance rhythm that keeps it from coming back. On CVA units plumbed near a warm cabinet this needs to happen more often than the manual suggests.
Burrs at end of life or a bean chute bridging on oily dark roasts — very common in Miami, where people buy the beans they like rather than the beans the machine likes. Burr replacement and a dose recalibration fixes the cup, and we will tell you honestly if the roast is fighting the grinder.

My Miele keeps asking to descale even after I run the cycle. What is actually wrong?
The circuit is calcified past the point where the onboard cycle can fix itself. The flow meter can no longer read proper flow, so the machine either aborts the cycle or re-flags descale immediately after finishing it. It needs manual decalcification with the panels off and the flow meter and 3-way valve cleaned by hand — typically $220–$420, usually one visit.
Is a Miele coffee machine worth repairing?
Yes, and that is the whole argument for owning one. A CVA built-in runs $4,000–$8,000 to replace and the cabinet cutout limits what you can put back in its place. The two repairs that account for most calls — a brew unit service and a proper descaling — land between $220 and $520. We only say replace when the brew unit housing, the boiler and the electronics have all gone at once, which is rare.
Do you work on built-in CVA machines that are plumbed into a water line?

How often should a built-in coffee machine be descaled here?
More often than the manual assumes, because the manual was not written for 200–350 ppm water. On a household pulling four to six drinks a day we suggest a professional descaling every 12 to 18 months on top of the machine's own cycles, and a brew unit service on the same visit. A filter sized to your actual water pushes that interval out considerably.
