Miele Dishwasher Salt Reservoir Light On — Hard Water Cycle Tips

Miele dishwashers have a built-in water softener that needs salt. In Miami's hard water market, that reservoir runs through salt faster than the manual suggests. Here's the right cadence.

A homeowner in Hialeah called us about her G7566 SCVi Miele dishwasher. The salt light had been on for "a while" and her dishes were coming out spotted, particularly the glassware. She'd assumed the salt indicator was a maintenance reminder she could ignore. The reality is that without salt, Miele's built-in softener stops working, hard water reaches the cabin, and dishwashing performance degrades fast. We refilled the reservoir, ran a calibration cycle, and her glassware was back to spec the next load.

Miele dishwashers are unusual among premium brands in that they include a real ion-exchange water softener inside the unit — the same technology a whole-home softener uses, miniaturized. The softener regenerates with salt from a dedicated reservoir under the front lower spray arm. In Miami's hard water market, this system is doing real work, and the salt runs out faster than the published intervals suggest.

What the softener actually does

Miami municipal water tests at 11 to 14 grains per gallon hardness (some areas hit 16). Miele's softener neutralizes hardness up to 17 grains, which means our water is right at the upper limit of what the system can handle.

The softener works by passing inlet water through a resin bed that exchanges calcium and magnesium ions for sodium. Over each cycle, the resin gets loaded with calcium and magnesium. To regenerate the resin (return it to usable capacity), the system periodically rinses the resin bed with salt brine — sodium chloride solution from the salt reservoir.

Without salt in the reservoir, the resin can't regenerate. Within a few weeks of running an empty reservoir, the resin saturates and stops softening incoming water. Hard water reaches the wash circuit, and you see:

  • Spotting on glassware (mineral residue on dried surfaces).
  • Reduced detergent performance (hardness binds the detergent before it can clean).
  • Slower cleaning on heavy loads.
  • Long-term: mineral scale buildup on the heating element and spray arms.

How often you need to refill in Miami

Miele's manual gives a published schedule that assumes European-typical water hardness (5 to 8 grains). In Miami's market, refill intervals run roughly double the manual's pace.

For our service area:

  • Light use household (1-2 cycles per day): refill every 4 to 5 months.
  • Standard household (2-3 cycles per day): refill every 2.5 to 3 months.
  • Heavy household (4+ cycles per day): refill every 6 to 8 weeks.

The unit lights up the salt indicator when the reservoir reads low. Don't wait until the light's been on for weeks. As soon as it illuminates, refill within a few days.

How to refill

The salt reservoir is at the bottom of the tub, accessed from the front lower spray arm position. The cap unscrews counterclockwise. Use only dishwasher-specific salt (Miele sells branded salt; generic dishwasher salt works too). Never use table salt, kosher salt, or rock salt — the additives in food-grade salts (anti-caking agents) damage the softener resin over time.

Standard procedure on first refill of a new dishwasher:

  1. Unscrew the cap. The reservoir is empty (factory-shipped) or near-empty.
  2. Use the included funnel. Pour salt slowly until it reaches the bottom of the fill opening.
  3. Add about a half cup of water to the reservoir after the salt. This starts the brine forming and prevents salt from caking.
  4. Wipe any spilled salt off the tub floor and the gasket area. Salt residue can corrode stainless if it sits.
  5. Screw the cap back on hand-tight.
  6. Run a normal cycle immediately, ideally with dishes in it. The cycle confirms the salt is reading correctly and starts using brine immediately.

For subsequent refills, the procedure is the same but you typically don't need to add water — there's already brine in the reservoir.

Setting the hardness correctly

Miele dishwashers have a hardness setting in the service menu that controls how aggressively the softener works. Out of the box, the setting is calibrated for moderate hardness (about 8 grains). For Miami, you want the setting at maximum.

To set hardness on G6000 and G7000 series:

  1. Open the door. Hold the start button while turning the unit on.
  2. Step into the service menu (the path varies by model — refer to the manual).
  3. Select water hardness setting. Choose the maximum value (typically labeled "highest" or as a specific grain number around 21-25).
  4. Confirm and exit.

This setting tells the dishwasher to use more salt per regeneration cycle, which means the resin recharges fully each time. The salt reservoir will need refilling slightly more often as a result, but cleaning performance will be reliably good.

If your dishwasher was installed and never had the hardness adjusted, this is the first fix to try if you're getting spotted glassware. About a quarter of the Miele service calls we make in Miami trace to incorrect hardness settings from install.

What spotted glassware actually looks like

Hard-water spotting on glass is small irregular deposits, often visible as light gray or white marks that don't wipe off easily. Distinguished from:

  • Detergent residue: white film, uniform across the surface, wipes off with a wet cloth.
  • Hard food residue: clear or yellow spots in specific locations on the dish.
  • Cloudy glass etching: permanent damage, doesn't wipe off ever. This is from prolonged hard water exposure and indicates the softener has been ignored for a long time.

If your glassware is etched (cloudy and permanent), the damage is already done. The cure is replacing the affected glasses; the prevention is salt and rinse aid going forward.

Rinse aid is not optional

Many Miele owners assume rinse aid is a nice-to-have. In Miami's water it's mandatory. The rinse aid reservoir refills typically every two months in standard households. Run it dry and even a perfectly functioning softener can't deliver spot-free results.

Miele's recommended rinse aid is the proprietary formulation, but third-party (Finish, Cascade) works fine. The unit has a dosing control in the service menu — start at the middle setting and adjust up if you see spotting, down if you see streaking.

The salt indicator versus the actual salt level

Miele's salt indicator triggers when the reservoir reads low, not empty. Once the light comes on, you typically have 5 to 15 more cycles of normal performance before the resin starts saturating. Refilling within a few days of the light coming on keeps the system working continuously without performance drops.

If the salt indicator stays on after refilling (and you're certain salt is in the reservoir), the reservoir cap may not be sealing properly or the sensor's failed. Check the cap first (a loose cap means brine doesn't form correctly), then call for service if cap reseating doesn't clear it.

Hialeah and West Miami-specific considerations

Inland West Miami-Dade — Hialeah, Hialeah Gardens, Doral, Miami Springs — has municipal water that tests at the high end of our regional hardness range. Salt reservoir refill cadence in those areas runs slightly more aggressive than in coastal neighborhoods, where the water often tests slightly softer due to different treatment plant inputs. If you live in West Miami-Dade and you have a Miele, plan for the refill cadence at the heavier end of the range.

A note on stainless tub corrosion

Salt that spills onto the stainless tub floor during refill and isn't wiped up can cause superficial corrosion (small spots, usually rust-colored). Wipe any spilled salt up immediately. If you've had spills sit, run a vinegar rinse cycle (one cup of white vinegar in the empty unit on a normal cycle) to neutralize residual salt and check the tub floor for spots.
