Wolf Range Igniter vs Spark Module — Which Fails When
Wolf range ignition problems break down into two distinct failure populations: the igniter (cheap, owner-detectable, single-burner) and the spark module (expensive, tech work, multi-burner). The diagnostic that tells them apart in two minutes.
Most Wolf range ignition calls trace to one of two parts. The igniter (technically the spark electrode) on a specific burner, or the spark module that powers all the igniters from behind the control panel. The fix and the cost differ by an order of magnitude — about $40 in parts for an igniter, about $260 for a spark module. The diagnostic that separates them takes two minutes once you know what to listen for.
Across the Wolf ranges we service — DF304, DF366, DF484, AG304, AG484, R304, R366, SRT366, CT36G — the failure populations are distinct enough that the diagnostic is almost binary.
The single-burner pattern: igniter
If one burner won't light and the others light cleanly, the problem is local to that burner. Either the igniter, the burner cap alignment, or the gas port cleanliness on that specific burner. The spark module is shared across all burners, so a failed module would affect all of them.
The owner check sequence on a single-burner non-ignition:
Reseat the burner cap. A misaligned cap is the most common cause we see; the fix is free and takes thirty seconds.
Clean the spark electrode. Use isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab. Carbonized boil-overs around the ceramic insulator suppress spark. Let it dry thirty minutes before retesting.
Check the gas ports on the burner head. Run a pin through each port to clear carbon.
If those three checks don't resolve, the igniter itself is the next part. Wolf spark electrodes are about $42 each, part 808093 on most dual-fuel models. Replacement is a 25-minute job for a tech. We see igniter replacements on year-8 to year-12 ranges in salt-air condo kitchens, more often on burners closest to the rangetop's edge where boil-over spillage concentrates.
The all-burners pattern: spark module
If all burners click but none light — or all burners spark continuously even when no knob is turned — the problem is the spark module.
The most distinctive symptom is the continuous-click failure: every igniter on the range firing in sequence, audibly clicking, regardless of whether any burner is requesting ignition. The module is reading a phantom request from a failed switch or a shorted harness and broadcasting spark to every electrode.
Wolf spark modules are part 808091 on most pre-2014 ranges, 9013098 on transitional models, 9026870 on newer production. List runs $215 to $290. Replacement is access-from-underneath through the cooktop and takes 45 to 75 minutes for a trained tech.
The other all-burners pattern is no spark at all — pull a knob and you hear no click, no spark, just gas. That's also a module failure (or a power supply issue upstream of the module).
The multi-burner-but-not-all pattern: switch
Less common but worth knowing: two or three specific burners spark continuously when one is requested. That's a switch failure on one of the affected burners. The switch is reading constant-on, requesting constant spark, and the module is firing every igniter on the affected circuit while leaving the others quiet.
Wolf burner switches are part 807894 on most pre-2014 ranges, 9013110 on transitional, 9026880 on newer. Each runs $90 to $130, replacement is access-from-underneath, about 40 minutes per switch.
The simmer-stutter pattern: gas valve
This isn't an ignition problem but it looks like one. A burner that lights cleanly on high but stutters or extinguishes on simmer is usually the simmer bypass orifice in the gas valve, not the igniter or module. Wolf brass valves use a secondary orifice for the simmer range; salt-air condo kitchens see these orifices clog with corrosion product at year 6 to 8.
The fix is valve replacement, $310 to $420 per burner. Don't confuse this with an ignition fault.
The owner-diagnostic sequence
If your Wolf range has an ignition issue, run this sequence before calling for service:
Step 1: Identify how many burners are affected. One burner = local fault. All burners = module or supply fault. Some but not all = switch fault.
Step 2: For single-burner faults, reseat the cap and clean the electrode. Resolves 60-70% of single-burner non-ignition complaints.
Step 3: For all-burner faults, check the gas supply at the wall. A closed shutoff feels identical to a module failure from the front of the range. The shutoff sits under the range or behind a cabinet on most installs; pulling the range out 4 inches gives access.
Step 4: For multi-burner faults that are not all burners, note which specific positions are affected and call for service.
Step 5: For continuous-click faults (clicking with no knob turned), shut off the breaker to the range and call. The continuous spark isn't dangerous if gas is shut, but it's hard on the module and the electrodes.
The cost differential
Single-burner fault, owner-resolved: $0. Single-burner fault, tech-resolved (igniter replacement): $180 to $240 all-in. Switch fault on one burner: $230 to $310 all-in. Spark module failure: $440 to $580 all-in. Spark module plus multiple igniters (typical after extended fault period): $520 to $720 all-in.
If the range is past year 12 and you're seeing spark module failure, ask about doing the igniters preventively while the module is out. The labor is shared and the all-in cost is materially lower than separate visits.
Coastal salt-air patterns
In oceanfront South Florida installations — Bal Harbour through Sunny Isles, the Surfside strip, oceanfront Palm Beach estates — we see spark module failures at year 7 to year 10. Inland, the same modules run year 12 to year 16.
The cause is salt aerosol on the high-voltage secondary winding of the module's spark transformer. The salt is conductive when humid; the transformer winding insulation degrades with cumulative salt exposure; eventually the secondary shorts and the module fails.
Symptom progression on coastal modules: first, mildly slow ignition on the burner closest to a window or salt-exposed area. Then, intermittent failures on multiple burners. Then, continuous-click on the whole range. The window from first symptom to hard failure averages 6 to 14 months on coastal units.
If you have a Wolf range within a quarter-mile of the water and you notice any of these symptoms, a $59 diagnostic catches the failure before the continuous-click stage, which is hard on every igniter on the range.
