Viking Professional Hood Fan Motor Burnout — Replacement Cost in Boca

Viking Professional ventilation hoods burn out fan motors at predictable intervals. Here's the lifespan in Boca and Delray homes, the replacement cost, and how to extend motor life.

A client in Boca Raton called us last spring about her Viking VWH3650 Professional hood. The fan had gotten progressively noisier over a few months, then one morning it just made a metallic grinding sound when she pushed the highest setting and shut itself off. By the time I had the motor housing open, the bearings were past saving — the motor had to be replaced. The customer's next question was the right one: was this a normal lifespan issue or did something specific kill the motor?

Viking Professional ventilation hoods — the VWH and VHE series — share a common motor architecture across most sizes. The 600 to 1200 CFM range covers the majority of installs we see. Motor lifespan in our market is predictable enough that we can plan around it. Most owners don't realize that.

The motor's job and its limits

A high-output range hood motor in a serious home kitchen does real work. Pulling 900 to 1200 CFM through a 7-inch duct against the static pressure of a typical Boca Raton home run requires sustained torque output. The motor's a fractional-horsepower induction unit with thermal protection, vibration-isolated mounting, and direct-drive squirrel cage impeller.

Designed lifespan is 8,000 to 12,000 hours of cumulative run-time. That's 4 hours per day, 7 days per week, for about 5 to 8 years at typical heavy use.

What we see in actual service life

Across our service records for Viking Professional hoods in South Florida:

  • Light use households (1-2 hours daily): 12 to 15 years.
  • Standard households (3-5 hours daily): 8 to 11 years.
  • Heavy entertaining households (6+ hours daily, especially weekends): 5 to 7 years.

These numbers run shorter than the Viking-published lifespan, which assumes ideal operating conditions. Real-world coastal South Florida adds factors: humidity, grease load, and inverter-fed VFD-style speed control that some installs use to overcome static pressure issues.

How the motor fails

The failure progression is consistent:

Stage 1 (years 1 to 4): motor runs quietly, on spec, no warning signs.

Stage 2 (year 4 to 6): light bearing noise becomes audible at the highest fan speed. Most owners don't notice or dismiss it as normal.

Stage 3 (year 6 to 8): bearing noise becomes obvious at medium and high speeds. Vibration increases. Some owners notice the hood's frame slightly buzzing.

Stage 4 (final 6 months): bearing failure imminent. Motor runs hot at highest setting, thermal protection trips occasionally, motor cuts out and resumes after cooling. This is the warning that replacement is overdue.

Stage 5 (failure): motor seizes mid-operation, makes grinding sound, trips its breaker, doesn't restart.

If you catch the failure at Stage 3 or earlier, you can schedule replacement at your convenience. If you wait until Stage 5, you're without ventilation for whatever the parts and labor lead time turns out to be.

Parts and replacement cost

Viking Professional hood motors are stocked through the Middleby parts pipeline. Common motors:

  • VWH3650 (36-inch hood, 900 CFM): motor part PM030054, around $480.
  • VWH3660 (36-inch hood, 1200 CFM): motor part PM030058, around $620.
  • VWH4860 (48-inch hood, 1200 CFM): motor part PM030060, around $720.
  • Wall-mount VHE variants: similar part numbers and pricing.

Labor for motor replacement runs 90 minutes to two hours. The hood has to come off the wall (or has to have the motor pulled from above on hoods with attic-mounted blowers). Total cost runs $720 to $1,100 for most installs.

Internal versus external blowers

Some Viking Professional installs use external blowers — the motor sits in the attic or on the roof, ducted to the hood. External blower service is more complex because the motor's harder to reach. Add 45 to 75 minutes labor for attic-mounted external blowers; more for roof-mounted.

For owners with external blowers and aging motors, the replacement-versus-rebuild conversation is worth having. Replacement motors for external blowers run $580 to $920 depending on CFM rating.

What extends motor life

Three practices that meaningfully extend hood motor lifespan in our market:

  1. Run the fan after cooking, not just during. Let the hood run at medium speed for 5 minutes after you finish cooking. This clears grease vapor from the duct before it cools and condenses on the motor housing. Owners who do this routinely get an extra 2 to 3 years out of their motor compared to those who shut the hood off the moment cooking finishes.
  1. Clean the grease filters regularly. Viking's metal mesh filters should be washed (dishwasher or by hand) every two to four weeks in active kitchens. Clogged filters force the motor to work harder against higher static pressure, accelerating wear. We see filters that haven't been cleaned in months on calls where the motor is failing prematurely.
  1. Avoid running the fan at maximum continuously. The 1200 CFM setting is meant for high-output cooking events, not sustained operation. Owners who default to high all the time wear the motor faster than owners who modulate.

Boca and Delray-specific considerations

Boca Raton and Delray Beach homes (where we get a lot of these calls) often have hood installs that share an exhaust duct path with the home's HVAC system. This isn't ideal — the hood fan can fight return-air pressure from the AC, and the AC can occasionally backfeed warm humid air through the hood duct. We see prematurely worn motors in installs where the duct routing was compromised.

If you're remodeling and the hood duct can be routed independently of the HVAC return-air path, do it. The ventilation improvement is real and the motor longevity benefit is real.

A failure mode that looks like the motor

Sometimes the symptoms point at the motor when actually the variable speed control (the touch panel or sliding control on the hood face) is the culprit. A failing control can cause the motor to run roughly, cycle erratically, or refuse to engage at high speeds.

Diagnostic check: if the fan runs cleanly at one speed but fails at others, the control is more likely than the motor. If the fan runs roughly across all speeds, it's the motor.

Control replacement runs $180 to $260 in parts plus labor, considerably cheaper than motor replacement.

A note on lighting circuit failures

Many Viking Professional hoods include integrated halogen or LED task lighting. The lighting circuit is a separate component from the fan motor. If your hood lights are flickering or out, that's a different repair than the motor and runs $90 to $180 parts plus labor.

These remotes use a small lithium coin cell that fails at year 3 to 5 — owners often interpret the failure as a hood control problem rather than a battery problem.
