Thermador Professional Range Igniters — Coastal Salt Pitting Symptoms

A client in Manalapan called us about her Thermador PRD606REG range. Three of the six burners were lighting slowly — five to eight clicks each before flame caught — and the front-right burner had stopped lighting entirely. She'd cleaned the burner caps, scrubbed the igniters, and reseated everything. The pattern told the cause: coastal salt pitting on the ceramic spark insulators across multiple burners simultaneously. The repair was straightforward but it gave us a chance to talk about why salt-air damage on igniters happens the way it does, and what owners in oceanfront properties can do about it. In ten years of luxury-appliance service across Miami, I've watched these failures cluster around the same two or three parts.

Thermador Professional ranges (PRD, PRG, PRL, and the older PG models) use spark igniters with ceramic insulators around the electrodes. In coastal South Florida, those ceramic surfaces pit and corrode in ways that don't happen in inland kitchens. The failure pattern is recognizable, the symptoms are consistent, and the fix is manageable if caught at the right time.

What salt does to ceramic

Spark igniter ceramics are typically high-alumina ceramic — durable, non-conductive, and reasonably resistant to most environmental insults. But salt aerosol does specific damage that other contaminants don't:

1. Surface pitting: salt particles land on the ceramic surface, absorb humidity, and concentrate ionic chloride that attacks the ceramic over time. Small surface pits develop and grow.

1. Conductive paths: once pitting starts, water absorbed into the pits can create momentary conductive paths between the electrode and the burner body. The spark "shorts" to the burner head instead of jumping across the gap to ignite gas.

1. Carbon adhesion: pitted ceramic holds combustion residue more aggressively than smooth ceramic. Carbon buildup further interferes with spark generation.

The result is igniters that work intermittently, take multiple clicks to fire, or eventually fail to spark at all.

Symptoms ranked by severity

The failure progression on Thermador igniters in coastal homes:

Stage 1: igniter fires on first or second click reliably. Normal operation.

Stage 2: igniter takes 3 to 5 clicks consistently. Annoying but functional. Salt pitting is starting.

Stage 3: igniter takes 5 to 10 clicks; sometimes succeeds, sometimes fails. Other burners on the same module may also start exhibiting symptoms (because they share the spark module).

Stage 4: igniter clicks continuously without firing on the affected burner. Other burners on the same range are showing Stage 2 or 3 symptoms.

Stage 5: spark module damaged from overwork; multiple burners affected.

If you catch the problem at Stage 2 or 3, replacing the affected igniters is straightforward. If you wait until Stage 5, the spark module itself may also need replacement — a much more expensive repair.

Owner-doable cleaning

Before booking service, try cleaning the affected igniters thoroughly. Sometimes carbon buildup mimics salt pitting and cleaning recovers function.

The procedure:

1. Make sure the range is off, cool, and the gas is shut off.
2. Pull the burner cap. Pull the burner head (it lifts straight up on Thermador Professional ranges, no tools).
3. Look at the white ceramic insulator around the electrode. It should be white to light-cream colored, smooth, without visible pits.
4. Wipe the ceramic with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol (90%+ purity). Work the alcohol into any visible deposit.
5. Let the alcohol evaporate completely (5 minutes).
6. Reassemble and try ignition.

If cleaning recovers full function, you've bought time. If cleaning doesn't help — or the ceramic shows visible pitting under good light — replacement is the next step.

What replacement involves

Thermador Professional igniters are field-serviceable. Each burner has its own igniter module that bolts to the burner base from underneath the cooktop.

Parts:

• Standard burner igniter: part 00638833 or similar (varies by model year), $35 to $55 each.
• Extra-low burner igniter (the ExtraLow burner positions on Pro Grand models): different part, around $65.
• Star Burner igniter (the central pilot star on Star Burner-equipped models): another variation.

Labor for single igniter replacement runs 30 to 45 minutes. Most service calls replace 2 to 4 igniters at once on coastal installs where multiple burners are showing symptoms, and the labor scales accordingly.

Total cost for replacing 4 igniters on a six-burner Pro Grand typically runs $280 to $440 all in.

When the spark module is affected

The spark module is the central electronic component that generates the high-voltage spark and routes it to whichever burner has been activated. The module is shared across multiple burners.

When pitted igniters create shorting paths, the spark module works harder and runs hot. Over time the module's internal components degrade. Symptoms of a degraded module include all burners on the affected side of the range lighting slowly, intermittent fault behaviors, and audible electrical noise from behind the controls.

Spark module replacement runs $180 to $260 in parts plus labor (roughly 90 minutes). If you're already replacing multiple igniters, ask the tech to verify the module's condition with a spark output check before reassembly. Catching a marginal module during igniter replacement adds 15 minutes; finding out later means another full service call.

Manalapan, Palm Beach, Jupiter, coastal exposure ranking

Across our service area, the coastal exposure ranking from worst to best for ceramic salt pitting is roughly:

1. Direct oceanfront with limited HVAC: Fisher Island estate kitchens, oceanfront Palm Beach estates without sealed kitchens. Igniter replacement every 3 to 5 years.

1. Oceanfront condos with normal HVAC: Sunny Isles, Bal Harbour, Surfside high-rises. Igniter replacement every 5 to 8 years.

1. Inland coastal (within 1 mile of water): Aventura, Bay Harbor, Coconut Grove. Igniter replacement every 7 to 11 years.

1. Coastal mainland (1-5 miles): Coral Gables, Pinecrest, Boca Raton. Igniter replacement every 10 to 14 years.

1. Inland (5+ miles): Weston, Doral, Hialeah. Igniter replacement every 13 to 18 years, often beyond the unit's service life.

The differential between oceanfront and inland is large enough that some buyers planning a coastal install actually reconsider the brand based on this kind of analysis. We don't usually recommend that, Thermador's other strengths outweigh the igniter wear issue, but it's worth knowing.

Preventive maintenance

For coastal installs, a quarterly burner cleaning routine helps:

1. Pull burner caps and burner heads. Wash in warm soapy water, dry thoroughly.
2. Wipe each ceramic insulator with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab.
3. Vacuum the burner well clean of debris.
4. Inspect each ceramic for visible pitting or damage. Catch problems before they're acute.
5. Reassemble all components square and dead-aligned.

15 minutes per burner, quarterly. The cumulative effect is a 30 to 50% extension of igniter service life in coastal homes.

A note on the convection oven igniters

The same cooktop salt issue doesn't typically affect convection oven igniters, which are protected from salt aerosol by the sealed oven cabin. But the gas safety valve and the oven thermocouple do see some exposure during cooking cycles, and these components can also wear in coastal homes. If your range's cooktop and oven are both showing ignition issues, the diagnostic should cover both systems.

A note on Thermador igniter part number generations

Older Thermador Professional ranges (pre-2013) used a different igniter family than current production. Parts for older units are still available but lead times can run 2 to 3 weeks. If your range is in that age bracket and you're planning igniter replacement, order parts ahead of the actual service appointment to minimize downtime.
